A locksmith’s endoscope is a tiny camera, with a light, on the tip of a thin cable that is fed through a gap and shows the image on a screen or a mobile phone. It lets you see what is going on inside the door or the lock without dismantling it.

For the locksmith, it is a way of seeing where a snapped piece of key is and how it has lodged, checking whether a bolt has been left thrown or has jammed, or inspecting a mechanism before deciding what to do. The better you can see, the less has to be broken.

It is a diagnostic tool more than an opening tool: it helps choose the least damaging approach and explain clearly what is wrong with your door before giving you a quote. How we use it is explained on our door opening page.
