A metal roller shutter is a shutter made with steel or aluminium slats, instead of plastic ones, that is raised by rolling onto a barrel. It is used on the windows and doors of homes, especially on the ground floor, and it is also what many people call the roller shutter door of a shop.

You can recognise it by its weight and by the sound it makes when you lower it. Aluminium ones usually have insulating filling inside the slat; steel ones, which are heavier, are seen mainly on shops and garages.

Being metal does not mean it is secure, because a shutter can be lifted from outside even if its slats are metal. For homes we have our own system: we reinforce the shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent, as we explain in shutter security. If it is the shutter of a shop, see roller shutter repair.
