An offset cylinder, “bombín descentrado” in Spanish, also called asymmetric, has one side longer than the other in relation to the fixing screw, for example 30x40. It is used when the lock is not in the centre of the thickness of the door or when one face has a thicker escutcheon than the other.
It is common on security doors with a security escutcheon on the outside, on doors with added panels and on locks that are not centred in the leaf.
When fitting it you need to pay close attention to which side faces outwards. If it goes in the wrong way round, the long side sticks out towards the street and is exposed to breaking or pulling, and the short side may sit recessed on the inside. It is a more common mistake than you might think.
To get it right, measure each side separately or send us photos of the cylinder in place, from outside and from inside. We sort it out with our cylinder replacement service.
