In locksmithing, a snap gun is a tool that delivers sharp, rapid blows to the pins of a lock cylinder to shift them. There are manual and electric versions, and the locksmith uses them for some openings of basic cylinders.

The same idea lies behind what is known as bumping, a method of forced entry that exploits basic cylinders with no protection. That is why today’s security cylinders include anti-bump protection, with special pins that do not respond to the blows in the same way.

If your cylinder is the one that came as standard with the door, it is worth finding out whether it has this protection. You can take our security test or look at the security cylinders we fit.
