Vandalism is senseless damage to other people’s property with no intention of stealing: kicks to a door, locks put out of action, bent metal roller shutters or broken window shutters. The aim is to break things, not to get in.

It is seen mainly on street level business premises, communal entrances, shared garages and empty homes. It can sometimes be hard to tell apart from attempted burglary, because the marks look similar. That difference matters for the police report and for the insurance.

If you come across it, take photos before touching anything and call the police. Then we check the door or the shutter and, if you need one, we give you a forced lock report setting out what we see. We leave the entrance secure, with a fixed quote before we start.
