It is almost always one of three things: the door closer is badly adjusted or worn, a hinge has given way or the latch no longer engages properly in the strike plate.
Clues to tell which one it is:
- If the door comes to slowly and stops a finger’s width short of closing, it is usually the door closer.
- If it rubs at the bottom or on the frame before closing, the leaf has dropped on its hinges.
- If it reaches the frame but bounces back, the latch or the strike plate is out of line.
While it is being fixed, ask the residents to check that it closes behind them when they go out. An entrance left open at night is an invitation.
Adjusting the entrance door usually solves it without changing anything expensive. If the fault is in the electric door release or the door entry system, we do not touch that and we will tell you so. More information in door repair and adjustment.
