Not very. The lever lock is the old type, the one with the long key with teeth at the tip, and it is one of the easiest to open without its key.

Inside it has few parts acting as safeguards, and on the outside it leaves a large hole in the door. On top of that, it cannot be improved by changing just one part, as you can with a cylinder.

It is still found in many homes, especially on old security doors, in village houses and in homes that have not been refurbished in many years.

The advisable thing is to convert it to a European cylinder. Depending on the door, the lock is adapted or replaced entirely, and then you choose whichever cylinder you like: anti-bump, anti-snap or high security. It is all in lever lock to cylinder conversion.

Why is it so hard to lock the door with the key?

It is nearly always because the door has gone out of alignment and the bolts do not go straight into the strike plate. An adjustment usually does it, without changing the lock. Read the full answer

Can security locks be fitted on aluminium doors?
