The bitting code of a key is the series of numbers that gives the depth of each of its cuts, position by position. It is like the key’s technical sheet: those numbers describe it exactly.

Each manufacturer uses its own scale of depths. A bitting code such as 3 5 2 6 4 means that the first cut has depth 3, the second depth 5, and so on to the last one.

It is used to make cylinders and keys that fit each other, to set up master key systems and to replace keys in an orderly way. Since it is information that describes your key, it should be handled with care: do not share it or leave it on paper next to your keys. If your cylinder is already old, you can review it when you change the lock cylinder.
