A coded key is one whose cuts follow a numerical code, so with that code and the right tools it can be made without having the original key to hand. The code is usually engraved on the key, on the card or on the cylinder’s packaging.
That is useful for the manufacturer and for the owner, because it allows keys to be replaced in an orderly way. But it also has a sensitive side: if the code is engraved on the key and someone takes a photo of it, they are already part of the way there.
A practical tip: do not leave your keys in view in public places and do not post photos in which they can be seen close up. High security lock cylinders with a key security card add an extra layer of control.
