A cylinder replacement means swapping the lock cylinder, the part the key goes into, for a new one with different keys. The lock stays in the door; only the cylinder is changed, and it comes out by undoing a screw in the forend.

It is the first thing worth doing when you move into a home you have bought or rented, when you lose a set of keys or if they are stolen. It is also a way of improving security by fitting a cylinder protected against bumping and snapping.

The important thing is to measure it properly, each side from the central screw to the edge, so it does not stick out from the door. A cylinder that sticks out snaps easily. Send us a photo and we will tell you what size it is. More under cylinder replacement.

Questions that mention it

Do you need to change the lock cylinder after a door opening?

Not always. If the door was opened without damage and you have your keys, the cylinder still works. It is changed if it broke or the keys were lost or stolen. Read the full answer

Should the cylinder be changed every time the tenant changes?

It is advisable, because you do not know how many copies the previous tenant made. A rekeyable cylinder lets you change the combination without replacing the part each time. Read the full answer
