Home insurance cover is the set of damage and costs that your policy undertakes to pay, with the limits, excesses and exclusions set out in the contract.
Where locks are concerned, policies vary a great deal. Some include emergency locksmith call outs or a lock change after a burglary; others only in certain cases or subject to conditions, and others do not include it at all. The name of the policy tells you nothing: what counts are the general and particular conditions.
Before anything happens, check your policy or ask your insurer what it covers for burglary, for damage to doors and locks and for homes that stand empty for long periods, which is very common in Torrevieja. Some policies also set conditions on how the home must be locked.
If you have to make a claim, it helps to have in writing how the lock was forced. We explain it on our forced lock report page.
