Ironmongery is the name given to the set of metal parts fitted to a door or a window so that it swings, locks and can be operated. It includes the hinges, the lock and its strike plates, the handles, knobs and pull handles, the escutcheons, the bolts and the hinge bolts.
When people talk about changing the ironmongery on a door, the door itself is not replaced: those parts are renewed, sometimes for looks and often because they are worn or no longer protect properly.
In Torrevieja and all along the coast, ironmongery takes a beating from the salt air. Low quality parts rust, stain and end up seizing. If you are going to change anything, choose finishes that stand up to the marine environment, especially on external doors. We look at it in detail when upgrading security doors.
