The lever handle is the lever you press down by hand to move the latch of the lock and open the door. It is connected to the lock by a square bar, the spindle, which passes through the leaf, and is usually mounted on a backplate or a rose.

When replacing it you need to check the size of the spindle, the thickness of the door, the distance between the spindle and the cylinder if it is on a backplate, and which way the door opens. If anything does not match, the new handle ends up loose or will not let you put the key in.

On the coast, cheap external handles pit and rust quickly. A handle that droops or does not spring back usually warns that the spring in the lock is worn. We replace handles without touching the lock when there is no need: you will find it in handles and knobs.

Questions that mention it

Can the handles be changed without changing the lock?

Yes, on most doors. The new handle just needs the same spindle and to fit the existing holes; if not, it is adapted with a backplate or a rose. Read the full answer
