A lock pick, “ganzúa” in Spanish, is a slim metal tool with a bent or shaped tip, inserted through the keyway of the cylinder to move the pins without the key. It is used together with a tensioner, which applies slight turning pressure.
We locksmiths use it to open doors without breaking anything when the lock allows it; in a burglar’s hands it is one of the ways of getting in without leaving obvious signs. That is why, after a burglary with no visible damage, the cylinder is sometimes inspected.
There are many types, including hook, rake and diamond picks. How well they work depends on the cylinder: basic ones offer little resistance; security cylinders, with special pins and complicated profiles, greatly reduce their effect.
If you want to know whether your cylinder holds up well, send us a photo of the key and the face of the cylinder. We will tell you whether it is worth moving to one of our security cylinders.
