Palastro is the Spanish name for the steel plate used to make the case of many locks, and by extension for the case itself or the plate the bolt is mounted on; in English you would simply call it the lock case plate. On classic rim locks, the palastro is the cover you can see on the inside face of the door.

Its thickness and quality affect how strong the lock is: a thin plate bends if someone levers or hits the lock, and the mechanism inside is thrown out of adjustment.

If you notice the cover of a rim lock bulging or its screws working loose, have it checked: it is a sign that the door has taken a blow or that the fixing is no longer holding. We cover this under lock installation.
