A security deadbolt is a second lock screwed onto the inside face of the door, usually above the main one, with a thick bolt that goes into a steel strike plate on the frame. It is worked with a key from outside and with a key or a thumbturn from inside.
It adds another locking point, separate from the main lock, and forces anyone trying to get in to beat two different mechanisms. It is a direct way of improving a door without changing the lock it already has.
Its strength depends on the fixing: bolts that go right through the door leaf and a strike plate firmly fixed into the wall. You can also ask for its cylinder to be keyed alike with the lock’s so you only use one key. You will find it under security deadbolts.
