A door bolt is a fastening that locks the door with a bolt that slides across until it engages in the frame. It can be worked by hand, with a lever or a knob on the inside, or with a key from outside.

The simplest ones, barrel bolts, are used on patio doors, storerooms or large gates and can only be locked from inside. Key-operated ones are fitted as a second lock on front doors and add another locking point.

A barrel bolt on the inside is useful at night, but it does not protect the house when you go out. If you want a second lock that also works from outside, what you need is a security deadbolt with a cylinder. We cover it under security deadbolts.
