The security grade, “grado de seguridad” in Spanish, is the value a standard assigns to a cylinder or a lock according to the level of protection it has shown in tests. It lets you compare products on an objective basis, instead of relying on words such as “security” or “high security” on the box.

In Europe, cylinders are classified under the UNE-EN 1303 standard and mechanical locks under UNE-EN 12209. Both use a code of several digits in which each position describes a characteristic, such as durability, corrosion resistance or security. For cylinders a distinction is also made between key security and attack resistance.

Practical tip: ask for the technical sheet and look for the standard and the full code. If nobody can tell you what grade it has, be wary of the label.
