Tamper evidence is any sign or part that shows whether a lock, a door, a seal or a security device has been tampered with.

It can be something put there on purpose, such as a seal that breaks when opened, a part that changes position or an alarm tamper switch that is triggered when its cover is opened. And it can be the trace left by the attempt itself: scratches around the keyway, an escutcheon that has been moved, traces of glue or a key that suddenly turns differently.

If you notice something like this, do not force the lock or take it apart yourself. Take photos, call the police if you suspect an attempted burglary and let a locksmith inspect it. We explain how on our forced lock report page, and how to reinforce the door afterwards on security upgrades.
