A grille bar is each of the metal bars that make up a grille, railings or a gate. They usually run vertically, joined at the top and bottom by flat bars or crossbars.

They may be solid or hollow (tubular), round, square or decoratively shaped. A solid bar is harder to cut or bend than a thin tube, which is why it is preferred for grilles that really have to protect.

The spacing is just as important. If the bars are too far apart, a slim person or a child can get between them, and the grille no longer does its job. How they are joined to the frame also counts: a loose or badly welded bar is the point where forcing begins.

Look out for rust at the base of each bar, especially near the sea. More information on our security grilles page.
