A lock change after eviction (desahucio) is the replacement of the cylinder or the lock of a home or business premises when the owner recovers it at the end of eviction proceedings, normally on the very day of the court-ordered eviction (lanzamiento judicial).
It is done because nobody knows how many keys are in circulation or whether the mechanism has been tampered with. With the change, the property is back in the hands of the person entitled to it.
There is a line that is never crossed: the lock is not changed on a tenant who is still living in the property, even if the contract has ended or there are debts. The change comes when the court has handed over possession or when the owner has already recovered it. For any questions about your proceedings, ask your lawyer or your court representative (procurador).
We explain how we work on that day on our lock change after a court-ordered eviction page.
