Mil Palmeras is the first urbanisation in Pilar de la Horadada as you come from Torrevieja along the coast. It borders Dehesa de Campoamor, which is the end of Orihuela Costa, so here you change municipality without noticing. It is a sandy beach area, with Mil Palmeras beach and Vistamar beach, and a quieter atmosphere than the large urbanisations to the north.

The typical home is a two or three-bedroom apartment or a penthouse on a complex with a communal pool and gardens, many a few hundred metres from the sea. New developments of low-rise blocks keep appearing. Alongside them there are villas and houses with a solarium and sometimes their own pool.

Much of what there is in Mil Palmeras is second homes or property let in summer. In July and August it fills up; out of season, quite a few houses spend weeks with the shutters down.

You open the terrace, a draught builds up and the front door slams shut with you outside. It is one of the most common things in beach apartments. Keys inside, a key lost on the beach, a lock that does not respond. Houses left on their own

A ground floor apartment or a villa shut from September to June needs more than a good door.
