We open the door to anyone who can show their right to enter that home, even if they are not named on the tenancy agreement or the title deeds. If that right is not clear, we do not open.
A partner who lives in the house can usually show it. The problem comes with separations: a former partner who no longer lives there, or a dispute in which each person says something different. In those cases it is not for us to decide who is right, and we do not open a door so that someone can go in against the wishes of the person living there.
If you are in that situation:
- Talk to your lawyer first.
- If there is a court ruling on the use of the home, have it to hand.
- If you fear for your safety, call the police.
We explain how the right to enter is shown when you call. There is more information in door opening.
