The manual release is the mechanism that disengages the motor of an automatic door or a motorised roller shutter so that it can be moved by hand. It is mainly for power cuts or motor faults, when the door is left stuck.

Depending on the installation, it can be a lever with a key on the motor itself, a cord with a pull handle hanging from the rail on ceiling mounted doors, or a lock with a cable on the front of the building that lets you free the motor of a shop shutter from outside.

It is worth knowing where yours is before you need it and keeping its key to hand. When you release it, hold the door: without the brake of the motor it can come down by itself if it is out of balance. We do not repair motors or automation systems; if the problem is the lock of a manual shutter, see roller shutter repair.

Questions that mention it

Can a shop roller shutter that has got stuck be opened?

Yes. We find where the jam is, in the lock, a guide rail or the axle, and free it without breaking the shutter whenever possible. Do not force it in the meantime. Read the full answer
