Benijófar sits right in the Segura river plain, about fifteen kilometres from Torrevieja. It is a farming village that has grown with townhouses, bungalows and villas, and where lifelong locals live alongside residents from many countries. You can see it in the locks: in the village, old locks on wooden doors; in the new areas, houses that change owner and keys that nobody keeps track of.
Wooden doors and damp from the river
Many houses in the village have a wooden street door. Being so close to the Segura, the wood feels the changes in damp and temperature: it swells in winter and shrinks in summer. Over time, the door rubs, the bolt does not go into place and the lock works under strain until something breaks inside.
That is why, before replacing a lock on a wooden door, we check the whole door:
- If the door has dropped, it is adjusted first.
- If the strike plate does not line up with the bolts, it is corrected.
- If the lock case has broken parts or tired springs, the lock is replaced.
Very often the problem is only one of adjustment, and in that case we tell you. We explain this in door repair and adjustment.
Old-fashioned locks
In the village there are still big-key lever locks. They work, but they do not give the security people look for today and their keys are hard to replace. The usual thing is to replace them with a lock that takes a euro cylinder, using the cut-out the door already has so as not to spoil the wood.
When you buy or rent
If you have just bought or rented in Benijófar, think of everyone who may have had a key before you. If the lock is in good condition, a new cylinder is enough. If it has play in it, the bolts do not come all the way out or it is old, replace it entirely. In the townhouses and villas of the new areas, check the back door and the terrace door too.
If you are an owner who lets your property, the best time is when a tenant hands back the keys and before the next one arrives.
Houses shut for weeks
Some Benijófar residents spend spells away. An outside lock that does not move for weeks seizes, all the more so if it was already old. When you come back, the key turns stiffly or the bolt is hard to throw. If you notice that before you go, it is better to replace it then than to find it jammed when you return.
