Roller shutter security in Benijófar

Benijófar is one of the smallest municipalities in the Vega Baja: just over four square kilometres on the right bank of the Segura, next to Rojales, Formentera del Segura, Algorfa and Los Montesinos. From Torrevieja it is about fifteen kilometres. With such a small municipality, the old village and the new areas are almost touching, and two very different ways of living sit side by side in the same town.

Village houses in the centre

In the village centre there are one and two storey houses with windows onto the street, many lived in all year. The front shutters can be seen from the street and there are neighbours around. The ones worth looking at are those on the back windows, facing a patio, and those on houses left shut for a spell.

Townhouses, bungalows and villas in the new areas

In the newer areas there are townhouses, bungalows and villas with a plot, a garden and a gate. Here the ground floor shutters are at garden level and, in many houses, face a side or the back. This is where reinforcement makes most sense.

Neighbours from many countries

According to INE figures for 2022, half of those registered in Benijófar were foreign nationals. Many are European residents who live here, close to Ciudad Quesada and the beach, and who now and then spend a few weeks away. During those weeks, the house is left empty with the shutters down.

How we reinforce the shutter

The weak point of a roller shutter is the bottom slat: it is the only one that can be gripped from outside to lift or bend it. Under it we glue and screw a T-shaped steel profile of 4 mm. A T does not bend in any direction, and the slat, joined to it, does not either. At both ends we fit bolts that slot into the wall. That is how we reinforce roller shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent.
