Door opening in Benijófar

Benijófar is a small town on the Segura river plain, just over four square kilometres in size, about fifteen kilometres from Torrevieja. It has around 3,700 residents and half of them are foreign nationals. Because the municipality is so small, the village houses in the centre and the newer areas of townhouses and villas are very close together, and in a single day we may open an old wooden door and a PVC sliding door.

Wooden doors and damp from the river

In the centre there are many one and two storey houses with a wooden street door. With the damp of the river plain in winter and the heat of summer, the wood swells and shrinks, and the door ends up rubbing against the frame. A door that rubs puts pressure on the bolt, and sometimes the key turns but the door will not come free. That is not a broken lock, it is a trapped lock. We explain this in jammed lock.

Locks with a big key

In Benijófar there are still lever locks, the old kind with a long key. They are opened differently from cylinder locks and often without any damage. The problem is usually something else: keys for those locks are hard to replace, so if you have lost yours, it is worth thinking about changing the lock once the door is open.

The newer areas

In the townhouses, bungalows and villas of the newer areas, with a garden, a gate and a terrace door, the openings are the same as on any urbanisation: the door that slams shut when you step out into the garden, the key left inside when you go to the pool, or the lock that will not turn after weeks shut up.
