Roller shutter security in Algorfa

Algorfa is an inland town in the Vega Baja, about twenty kilometres from Torrevieja, which has gone from living off its market gardens to living largely off residential tourism. The La Finca golf course and the urbanisations of Lo Crispín, Castillo de Montemar and Montebello have changed the town. According to the INE it has around 3,800 inhabitants, and more than half are foreign nationals.

Villas and apartments

On the Algorfa urbanisations there are mainly two types of home:

• Villas on their own plot, many single storey, with a gate, a garden and several outside doors. All their shutters are at garden level.
• Apartments in complexes with a pool and communal areas, where the ground floor homes have their windows at ground level.

Next to the La Finca golf course there are homes belonging to year-round residents and to people who come by the season. That means houses with life in them and closed-up houses sit side by side on the same street.

Seasonal letting

In Algorfa many villas and apartments are let by the week or by the month. Between one rental and the next the house may be left empty, sometimes with the shutters down to protect it from the sun. The village

In the centre there are village houses and flats belonging to long-standing residents, with shutters that go up and down every day. Reinforcement makes most sense in ground floor homes with windows onto back patios or in houses left shut for a spell.

How we do it

We work on the bottom slat, the lowest one, which is the one that can be gripped from outside. Underneath it we glue and screw a T-shaped steel profile of 4 mm. Because of its shape, a T does not bend in any direction, so the slat stays rigid. At both ends we fit bolts that slot into the wall, so there is nowhere to lift it from. Which shutters first in a villa

In a single storey villa every window is within reach. If you are not going to reinforce them all, start with:

1. The bedroom ones facing the back.
2. Those on a narrow side between the house and the wall.
3. Those hidden by hedges or by the garden planting.
