Dolores is a municipality in the Vega Baja set on the plain formed by the Segura near its mouth, barely a few metres above sea level. It borders Elche to the north, Almoradí and Daya Nueva to the south, San Fulgencio to the east and Catral to the west. The INE gives it around 8,300 inhabitants. From Torrevieja it is about twenty-five kilometres.

A town born from draining the land

Dolores has a very particular origin: it was born in the 18th century from the works to drain the marshland of the area, promoted by Cardinal Belluga. That land reclaimed from the water became farmland and the town grew up around it.

Today irrigated farming and the footwear industry count for less than they used to, and the main activities are services and construction. It is a town of residents who live here all year round, with shops in the centre and houses in the countryside.
