Los Montesinos is a small inland town about twelve kilometres from Torrevieja, with just over 5,100 inhabitants in the 2021 census. Its life is split between the village centre and the urbanisations of La Herrada, where many British residents settled, and Montesol. They are quiet urbanisations of low houses, and that is where most of the shutters we are asked to reinforce in the municipality are found.
La Herrada and Montesol
On these urbanisations villas on their own plot, townhouses and bungalows are the norm. Almost every home has a garden, a gate and ground floor shutters. Some houses are lived in all year and others are left shut when their owners go back to their own country for a few weeks.
On an inland urbanisation, when a house is left empty there is not much activity around it. The shutters most at risk are:
- Bedroom ones facing the back of the plot.
- Those on a narrow side between the house and the neighbour’s wall.
- Those on the kitchen or utility room, which often face a patio.
The village
In the centre of Los Montesinos there are one and two storey village houses, many lived in all year by local families. With the shutter going up and down every day and neighbours in the street, the risk is lower. What we do see are ground floor windows facing an inner patio; those are the ones worth looking at.
How we reinforce the shutter
We work on the bottom slat, the lowest one, which is where a shutter is gripped from outside. Underneath it we glue and screw a T-shaped steel profile of 4 mm. The T, because of its shape, does not bend in any direction, and the slat becomes just as rigid. At both ends there are bolts that slot into the wall, so there is nowhere to lift it from either. We reinforce roller shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent. The full explanation is in roller shutter security.
The shutter and the door
If your house is left empty, the shutter is only one part. The other is the front door and, above all, the back door. If you are worried about squatters, read what we say in protection against squatters. There we explain what is worth strengthening in a home that spends time shut up.
How to tell whether yours can be reinforced
Send us on WhatsApp a photo of the lowered shutter from outside, another of the bottom part, where the bottom slat rests, and another of the sides. You can message us in English or in whichever language you prefer. If it can be reinforced, we give you a fixed quote before we start.
