Door opening in Los Montesinos

A small inland town with two worlds, the village centre and the urbanisations. We open doors in both, at any hour and every day.

Los Montesinos is a small inland municipality in the Vega Baja, about twelve kilometres from Torrevieja, with just over 5,100 residents in the 2021 census. Its homes are spread between the village centre, the traditional neighbourhoods around it and the La Herrada and Montesol urbanisations. The doors are very different, and so are the openings.

In the village: wooden doors and locks with years behind them

The village houses in the centre usually have a wooden street door, many with locks that have been there since the house was built. Some still take a big key and have no cylinder. These doors are opened differently from a modern one and, very often, without any damage. If the wood has taken on damp or dried out in the heat, the door rubs, and that also affects how it is opened.

Typical here: the key forgotten inside when you nip out for bread, the door that slams shut in the draught from the patio, or the old lock that one day refuses to turn.

In La Herrada and Montesol: villas, townhouses and bungalows

The urbanisations are a different story. Villas on their own plot, townhouses and bungalows, with a gate, a garden, a terrace door and sometimes a back or kitchen door. Many residents are British people who stayed on to live here, and the town hall itself records that they are the largest EU-origin nationality in the municipality. If it is easier for you, message us on WhatsApp in English or in your own language.

On an urbanisation house it is common to get locked out by the garden door, in aluminium or PVC, which shuts by itself when you step outside. First of all, check whether any other door of the house has been left open: sometimes the answer is simpler than it looks. If not, you will find the first steps in keys locked inside the house.

When the house has been shut for weeks

Some houses in La Herrada are left empty when their owners go back to their own country for a few weeks. When they return, the cylinder may be stiff with dust or not have moved for a long time. Do not force the key: if it bends or snaps, the opening becomes a good deal more complicated. Send us a photo and we will tell you what to do.

Checking before we open

In a small town it may seem unnecessary, but we do it all the same: before opening we check that whoever is asking has the right to enter that home. We explain how that is proved when you call. If the paperwork is locked inside, tell us, as there is a way round it.
