Lock replacement in Los Montesinos

In Los Montesinos we are asked to replace locks for very different reasons depending on the area. In the village, because the lock is many years old and has nothing more to give. In La Herrada and Montesol, because the house has just changed hands and nobody knows how many keys there are. From Torrevieja it is about twelve kilometres and we work throughout the municipality.

Village houses with the same old locks

In the village there are many one and two storey houses with a wooden street door. They are homes belonging to local families, in use all year. Some still have the old kind of big-key lock, which is easy to open and whose keys are hard to replace. Others have more modern locks that are badly worn: bolts that do not come all the way out, latches that do not spring back and keys that slip.

In most cases the lock can be replaced with one that takes a euro cylinder, using the existing cut-out in the door. We explain this in converting a lever lock to a cylinder.

Wooden doors that move

With the summer heat and the winter damp, wood moves. A door that rubs in its frame forces the lock to work under strain and ends up breaking parts inside. Before replacing anything, we check that the door has not dropped and adjust the strike plate. If you put a new lock on a door that rubs, it will not last long.

On the urbanisations houses are bought and sold frequently. If you have just bought, change at least the cylinder on the front door. If the lock is years old or does not lock properly, replace it entirely. And go over the back door and the terrace doors, which are often forgotten.

Houses left empty

Some owners in La Herrada spend weeks in their own country. A lock that does not move for a month seizes, and when you come back it is hard to open. If the lock was already struggling, it is a good time to replace it before you go, not when you get back with the suitcases at the door.
