Questions about shops and metal roller shutters

This group is for anyone who runs a shop, a bar, an office or a warehouse and relies on their metal roller shutter every day. We have gathered the questions we are asked when the shutter will not go up, when the key to the premises is lost or when someone has tried to force it.

We also answer practical questions: whether we work outside shop opening hours, whether we invoice companies and whether the keys of several staff can be organised with a master key system.

On the coast, shutters suffer a great deal from the salty air and from the low season months when they are not moved. If you want to know what we can repair and what we cannot, have a look at metal roller shutter repair. We do not work on shutter motors: if the fault is in the motor, we will tell you when we see the photo.

What do I do if my shop’s metal roller shutter will not go up?

Do not force it. Check that the lock is fully open and that nothing is blocking the guide rails; if it still will not go up, it is usually the axle spring or a slat out of its rail. Read the full answer

Do you open shops and premises outside opening hours?

Yes. We work 24 hours a day, every day, including at night and on bank holidays. Before opening we check that the person asking has the right to enter the premises. Read the full answer

Can the lock on a metal roller shutter be changed?

Yes. The lock, or just the cylinder, is changed without touching the rest of the shutter. It may be a floor, central or side lock; a photo shows us which one you have and what fits. Read the full answer

What is a collapsible gate?

It is a folding metal gate, also called a scissor gate, made of vertical bars joined by crossed flat bars, which does not go up: it gathers to one side like an accordion. Read the full answer

How often should a shop’s roller shutter be serviced?

As a rule, once a year, and also before reopening if the premises stay shut for months. On the seafront, with more salt in the air, it is worth doing it more often. Read the full answer

What do I do if my shop’s roller shutter has been forced?

Touch nothing, call the police and take photos. Then we secure the shutter so the premises are shut, and give you a written account of how it was forced for the police report and the insurer. Read the full answer

Do you set up master key systems for offices and shops?

Yes. We design a key system in which each person opens only the doors they need and a master key opens everything, with a plan of who opens what. Read the full answer

What do I do if I have lost the keys to my premises?

If you cannot get in, we open up. After that it is worth changing or rekeying the cylinder, especially if the keys had anything on them that identifies the business. Read the full answer

Do you issue invoices to companies?

Yes. We issue an invoice with the company’s tax details and an itemised breakdown of the work and materials. Payment is by card, Bizum or cash. Read the full answer

Can a shop roller shutter that has got stuck be opened?

Yes. We find where the jam is, in the lock, a guide rail or the axle, and free it without breaking the shutter whenever possible. Do not force it in the meantime. Read the full answer
