JIS is one of the brands that turn up when you look at the faceplate of some locks on front doors and patio doors in the area. When a lock starts giving trouble, the big question is always the same: do you repair it or replace it?
Repair or replace
It depends on what is failing and what state the lock is in:
- It is worth repairing when the problem is dirt, a tired spring, a loose screw or a misaligned strike plate. These are quick fixes done as part of a lock repair.
- Replacing the cylinder is enough when the lock works well but the keys have been lost or the cylinder is worn.
- It is better to replace the lock when the mechanism is badly worn, there are broken parts that cannot be found or you want more security. In that case we do a lock replacement with a compatible one that uses the same recess.
Signs that something is wrong
- The key goes in but you have to wiggle it to make it turn.
- The latch does not spring out on its own when you let go of the handle.
- To lock it you have to push or lift the door.
- You hear metal rubbing when you turn the key.
Many of these signs come not from the lock but from the door, which has dropped slightly. Before changing anything we check it all, because a new lock on a sagging door will fail again.
How we arrange it
Send us a photo of the lock faceplate, the cylinder and, if you can, a short video of you turning the key. From that we can tell you what is needed and give you a fixed quote before we start. If something different turns up once it is taken apart, we let you know and do not carry on without your agreement. You pay by card, Bizum or cash.
