STS is one of the brands we see stamped on locks and cylinders on front doors in the area. As with any other brand, what decides what to do is the condition of the part and the type of door it is fitted on.
What we usually do with STS
- Replace the cylinder when keys are lost, the cylinder is stiff or you want a more secure one.
- Inspect and maintain the lock when it starts to get stiff, before it jams.
- Replace the lock with a compatible one if the mechanism is worn or broken. We do this as part of our lock replacement service, using the existing recess in the door.
Outside doors and salt air
In Torrevieja many locks face straight outside: bungalow doors, patio, terrace or solarium doors. The sea air leaves a layer of salt which, with the overnight damp, gradually rusts the parts inside. You do not notice it from one day to the next, but one summer the key starts to get stiff and by winter it will not turn.
What helps:
- Lubricate the cylinder and the latch with a dry product a couple of times a year.
- Do not use cooking oil or thick grease, which trap sand.
- Lock and unlock it every so often if the house stands empty for a while.
In communities and businesses, where there are many outside locks, the practical answer is regular lock maintenance.
If it has already jammed
