MICEL is a door hardware brand found in many hardware shops. Its deadbolts, barrel bolts and fittings often appear on patio doors, storerooms, garden sheds and interior doors in the home.
What we usually do with MICEL
- Adjust the bolt when the barrel bolt or deadbolt no longer goes into its keep because the door has moved.
- Replace the part with an identical or compatible one when it is broken, rusty or has come away from the frame.
- Fit a stronger lock if the current one falls short, for example a deadbolt with a cylinder instead of a surface barrel bolt.
Patio and storeroom doors
In the bungalows and ground floor houses on the coast, the door to the patio or the pool pump room is usually a simple one, sometimes made of thin sheet metal. There a barrel bolt or a basic deadbolt is fine for keeping the door from swinging open, but not for stopping anyone. If that door gives access to the house or protects something of value, it is worth thinking about a well-anchored security deadbolt or door reinforcement.
Watch out for rust
Outdoor hardware near the sea rusts sooner than you would think. If the barrel bolt has gone stiff, do not hammer it: clean the area, apply a dry lubricant and work it back and forth several times. If it still will not slide, the part may be pitted inside and need replacing.
