UCEM is a brand that appears on mortice locks, the ones set inside the edge of the door. We find it on wooden front doors and on some patio and storeroom doors.
What a mortice lock looks like
Inside the door there is a metal case holding the mechanism: the latch, which is the tongue that catches when you pull the door shut, and the bolt, which comes out when you turn the key. From outside all you see is the faceplate on the edge, the handle and the cylinder. When something fails, it is almost always one of these parts.
What we usually do with UCEM
- A latch that will not come out or sticks. Usually dirt or a tired spring. It is taken apart, cleaned and adjusted.
- A bolt that does not come all the way out. Very often the strike plate in the frame is out of line because the door has dropped. The strike plate is corrected or the door is adjusted.
- Lost keys or a stiff cylinder. Only the cylinder is replaced, without touching the lock.
- A lock beyond repair. We carry out a lock installation with a compatible one that fits the same recess.
If you are unsure whether to repair or replace, on the lock repair page we explain what can be fixed and what cannot.
Patio doors on the coast
Patio and garden doors take sun, rain and salty air. An interior mortice lock fitted there rusts much sooner. If we are going to replace it, we will suggest one designed for outdoor use, and if the door gives access to the house, a security deadbolt as a second lock as well.
Send us a photo on WhatsApp of the edge of the door and another of the handle and the cylinder. A fixed quote before we start; you pay by card, Bizum or cash.
